A blaze that broke out around 4 p.m. in a two-story home on Vernon Avenue took several hours to contain. The 12 residents of the structure escaped safely, but several minor injuries to firefighters were reported.

Earlier Sunday, just a short distance away, a four-family structure on Haven Avenue was destroyed by a fire that left 18 homeless.

The Red Cross is assisted those affected by both fires.
